The Strawberry Festival

The Strawberry Festival was born in the late 1860s, when the Ladies of the Rock Creek Church gathered to raise funds for urgent repairs and beautification of the parish’s badly sprung north wall. In the wake of hardship and loss, they transformed necessity into celebration—offering hospitality, music, and strawberries as a way of drawing the community together.

What began as a practical effort to restore the parish’s walls soon became a sign of resilience and renewal. Out of what was broken came joy, fellowship, and generosity.

Now more than 157 years later, the Strawberry Festival endures as one of the most beloved traditions in the Petworth neighborhood and across the city. Each summer, neighbors and friends return to these grounds to share food, laughter, and community, while supporting the parish and its ministries.

The festival remains what it has always been: a gift of joy from Rock Creek to the city around it, rooted in faith and carried forward by generations.
